Permanent Christmas lights — sometimes called permanent holiday lighting, permanent roofline lighting, trim lights, eave lighting, or year-round LED lighting — are the most important development in residential exterior lighting in the past twenty years. They replace the annual cycle of installing, removing, and storing seasonal Christmas lights with a beautiful, invisible-by-day, app-controlled track that lives on your home permanently and transforms with the calendar.
Roof Lites Chicago is the permanent lighting division of Paramount Outdoor Lighting Group and the preferred Authorized JellyFish Lighting Dealer serving Chicago and the surrounding North Shore, Northwest, Lake County and Western suburbs. Our installations stay beautiful for years, are warrantied against defect and installation issues, and are supported locally — not by a national 800 number.
What Are Permanent Christmas Lights?
A permanent Christmas lighting system is a low-profile track of individually addressable RGBW LED fixtures installed discreetly under the eaves of a home or commercial building. Each LED puck contains four chips — red, green, blue, and dedicated warm white — that can be controlled independently. The result: a single system that can produce a calibrated 2700K warm-white architectural glow, a deep saturated red-and-green Christmas display, pastel Easter washes, dynamic rainbow animations, school-color patterns, or any custom scene you can imagine. All from a smartphone app.
During the day the track is virtually invisible. The aluminum channel is color-matched to your soffit, fascia, or trim so the fixtures read as a slim shadow line under the eave. At night, you push a button on your phone and the entire roofline lights up in whatever scene you want.
Permanent vs. Traditional Christmas Lights — A Direct Comparison
Permanent Christmas lights aren't just a fancier version of traditional Christmas lights. They are a fundamentally different category of product. Here's the honest comparison.
Installation and Removal
Traditional Christmas lights are installed every November (with a paid install crew, typically $800–$3,500 for a residential home) and removed every January. Permanent Christmas lights are installed once. There is never another install or removal fee for the life of the system.
Daytime Appearance
Traditional C9 or mini-light strands are visible during the day all season long — cords drooping along the eave, stakes in the lawn, plug boxes hanging from outlets. Permanent JellyFish lights disappear into the trim. The only daytime detail is a thin color-matched aluminum channel that is essentially imperceptible from the street.
Reliability
Traditional Christmas light strings fail constantly — a single bad bulb can take down an entire run, and exposure to weather and squirrels and ladders shortens their useful life to a few seasons. Permanent JellyFish fixtures are commercial-grade, sealed against moisture, rated for extreme temperatures, and individually addressable so a failed fixture (rare) doesn't affect the rest of the run.
Versatility
Traditional Christmas lights do one thing — they look like Christmas, between November and January, in whatever color pattern you bought. Permanent Christmas lights do every holiday, every color, every night of the year. Red on Valentine's Day. Green on St. Patrick's Day. Pastel on Easter. Red-white-blue on the Fourth of July. Orange on Halloween. Red-and-green at Christmas. Pink for breast cancer awareness. Blue for autism awareness. School colors on game day. A subtle warm white the other 300 nights of the year.
Energy and Operating Cost
Traditional incandescent Christmas lights are notoriously power-hungry. Modern LED Christmas lights are far better but still draw more current at full brightness than the equivalent JellyFish run, and they have nowhere near the per-pixel control. A typical permanent installation costs $3–$8 per month in electricity to run dusk-to-dawn every night, and slightly more in full-color holiday mode.
Total Cost of Ownership
Most clients break even on a permanent Christmas lighting system versus paid seasonal installs in 3–5 seasons. After that, the system pays you back every year for the rest of its service life. And that calculation ignores the everyday architectural lighting benefit — which alone, in our opinion, justifies the system.
Energy Savings and Efficiency
Permanent LED lighting is among the most energy-efficient exterior lighting technologies available. A typical 150-foot JellyFish residential install draws about 150 watts at full warm-white brightness — about the same as one or two old incandescent bulbs. Most clients run the system dusk-to-dawn every night in low-intensity warm-white mode and see roughly $3–$8 added to their monthly electric bill.
Full-color holiday mode uses slightly more — perhaps double — and animated scenes (chase patterns, twinkles, color cycles) sit between the two. Even at maximum brightness in the heaviest holiday mode, a permanent JellyFish system uses dramatically less power than the equivalent traditional incandescent C9 display.
App Control and Smart Features
The JellyFish app is the brain of the system. From your phone, anywhere in the world, you can:
- Switch instantly between hundreds of preset holiday scenes
- Design and save custom scenes with any color combination
- Run animated patterns — chases, twinkles, fades, rainbows, color cycles
- Schedule scenes to start and end automatically by sunset, sunrise, or fixed time
- Pre-program the entire holiday calendar in advance so the system handles it for you
- Set up zones — light only the roofline, only the garage, only the columns, only the soffits
- Trigger an instant red-and-blue alert mode in response to suspicious activity
- Toggle between bright security mode and ambient evening lighting with one tap
The app updates over the air, so new features and presets ship to your system without any service call.
Holiday Examples
- Christmas: Classic warm-white, traditional red-and-green, chase patterns, twinkling snow, candy-cane stripes.
- Halloween: Orange and purple washes, flickering haunted-house effects, lightning patterns.
- Independence Day: Red-white-blue stripes, animated patriotic chase, fireworks-style sparkle.
- Valentine's Day: Soft pink and red washes, heart-pattern animations.
- St. Patrick's Day: Saturated emerald green.
- Easter and Spring: Pastel washes — soft yellow, lavender, mint, baby blue.
- Thanksgiving: Warm amber and orange autumn tones.
- Hanukkah: Deep blue and white, candle-pattern animations.
- Mardi Gras, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Pride Month: Full-spectrum scenes for every culture and celebration.
Everyday Architectural Lighting
The single most underrated feature of permanent Christmas lights is the everyday warm-white mode. Most JellyFish owners run the system at low-to-mid intensity, in a 2700K–3000K warm-white scene, every single night dusk-to-dawn. The result is gentle, even architectural accent lighting along the roofline that makes the home read as intentional every single evening — the kind of curb-appeal upgrade that used to require a permanent landscape lighting system on top of seasonal Christmas lights.
For many of our clients, "permanent Christmas lights" is the wrong name. They are everyday architectural lights that happen to also do every holiday on command.
Security Lighting
JellyFish systems double as effective passive security lighting. A bright-white roofline run dusk-to-dawn removes the dark eaves and shadowed corners that intruders rely on. The app supports an instant "alert" scene — typically red and blue flashing — that can be triggered remotely to scare off suspicious activity and draw attention to the property. We've had multiple clients tell us they activated the alert scene from inside the house and the visitor in the yard left immediately.
HOA Approval and Compliance
Permanent Christmas lights are HOA-friendly. The aluminum channel is color-matched to the trim and virtually invisible during the day. The system has no ladders, no exposed cords, no stakes, no permanent visible bulbs. We've successfully installed JellyFish in dozens of HOA communities across the Chicago area, including communities with strict architectural review committees.
On request, we provide a complete HOA approval packet with daytime photos of similar installations, technical specifications, warranty documentation, and the JellyFish manufacturer's HOA-compliance literature. Most HOA boards approve within one review cycle.
Warranty
JellyFish fixtures carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty against defects. Paramount adds a separate installation and labor warranty that covers the entire system — fixtures, controller, wiring, and our labor — for the same period. After the warranty window, support continues at standard service rates. Most installations remain in service well beyond the warranty window.
Installation Process
A typical residential JellyFish installation takes 1–2 days on site. Here's how it goes.
1. On-Site Measurement and Quote
A Paramount designer visits the property, measures every linear foot of intended roofline run, identifies controller and power locations, photographs the trim color for channel matching, and writes a fixed-price quote that includes fixtures, channel, controller, wiring, labor, and the WiFi setup.
2. Fabrication
The aluminum channel is fabricated on site to fit the exact dimensions of your roofline, including miters at every corner. The channel is color-matched to your soffit, fascia, or trim.
3. Installation
The channel is screwed discreetly under the eaves, the LED fixtures are seated into the channel at the correct pixel pitch, and low-voltage wiring is routed back to the controller location. The controller is mounted in your garage, utility room, or other interior space, and connected to your home's WiFi.
4. Commissioning
We program the system, set up your account, install the app on your phone, and walk you through a complete training session — favorite scenes, schedule setup, holiday presets, alert mode. You leave the install knowing exactly how to use the system.
Maintenance
Permanent Christmas lights require very little ongoing maintenance. The fixtures are sealed and rated for the full Chicago weather year. Occasionally a fixture may need replacement (covered under warranty) or the controller may need a firmware update (we push these remotely). Most clients never need a service visit between installation and the end of the warranty period.
Commercial Permanent Lighting
Permanent LED roofline lighting is increasingly standard for commercial properties — restaurants, hotels, retail centers, office parks, multi-family communities, and HOA common areas. The benefits are amplified at commercial scale: no seasonal install bills (which can run into five figures on large properties), instant brand-color flexibility, year-round architectural accent lighting that improves the property's nighttime appearance, and the ability to coordinate displays for events and promotions.

RGB and Smart Outdoor Lighting
RGB lighting (red-green-blue color-mixing LED) used to be a novelty reserved for nightclubs and stage productions. Modern outdoor RGB systems — JellyFish included — are calibrated for architectural use, with the warm-white channel added separately so the system can deliver both saturated color and proper architectural lighting from the same fixtures. Combined with WiFi-based smart control, the result is a category of outdoor lighting that simply didn't exist a decade ago.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are permanent Christmas lights?+
Permanent Christmas lights are a year-round track of individually programmable RGBW LED pucks installed discreetly under the eaves of a home or commercial building. Unlike traditional seasonal Christmas lights, they stay up permanently, are nearly invisible during the day, and are controlled from a smartphone app — letting you switch between warm-white architectural accent lighting (every night), holiday colors (Christmas, Halloween, Independence Day, St. Patrick's Day), and game-day patterns instantly.
What is JellyFish Lighting?+
JellyFish Lighting is the leading permanent outdoor LED lighting system in the U.S., manufactured to commercial standards in Utah. Each fixture contains three independently controlled LED chips — red, green, blue, and warm white — housed in a low-profile aluminum channel installed under the roofline. Paramount Outdoor Lighting Group is an Authorized JellyFish Lighting Dealer for the Chicago area.
How much do permanent Christmas lights cost?+
Permanent Christmas lights cost between $4,500 and $15,000 installed for most Chicago-area homes. Price is driven primarily by linear footage of roofline, accessibility, and whether the install includes additional trim runs like soffits, columns, or tree wraps. Most clients break even versus paid annual holiday installs in 3–5 seasons.
Are permanent Christmas lights worth it?+
For most homeowners, yes. The math works in three ways. First, you stop paying for seasonal installation and removal year after year. Second, you gain everyday architectural lighting that makes the home look intentional every single night. Third, you get a celebration tool for every holiday and event without buying or storing additional decorations.
Are permanent Christmas lights visible during the day?+
Barely. JellyFish fixtures are housed in a slim aluminum channel that's color-matched to the soffit, fascia, or trim. From street level the track virtually disappears. Most clients tell us guests don't notice the system is there until they see it lit at night.
How energy-efficient are permanent LED lights?+
Extremely. A typical 150-foot residential JellyFish install draws roughly 150 watts at full brightness in everyday warm-white mode — about the same as two old incandescent bulbs. Running every night dusk to dawn costs most homeowners $3–$8 per month in electricity. Holiday color mode uses slightly more but is still a fraction of traditional Christmas light power draw.
Will permanent Christmas lights be approved by my HOA?+
In most cases, yes. The reason is that the daytime appearance is essentially invisible — there's no exposed bulb, no visible cord, and the channel is color-matched to the trim. We have installed JellyFish in dozens of HOA communities across the North Shore and Northwest suburbs, and we provide HOA approval packets with daytime photos, technical specifications, and warranty documentation on request.
What is the warranty on permanent Christmas lights?+
JellyFish fixtures carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty against defects. Paramount adds an additional installation and labor warranty so the entire system — fixtures, controller, wiring, and labor — is covered for the same period. Most installations remain in service well beyond the warranty window.
How are permanent Christmas lights installed?+
Installation is typically completed in 1–2 days. We measure the roofline, fabricate the channel on site, screw it discreetly under the eaves, run low-voltage wiring back to a controller, mount the controller in a garage or utility space, and connect the system to your home's WiFi. Then we walk you through the app and program your favorite scenes together.
Can the lights change color for different holidays?+
Yes. Each LED is individually addressable, which means you can run any pattern, color combination, animation, or static scene you can imagine. The app ships with preset scenes for every major U.S. holiday plus customizable scenes for birthdays, game days, weddings, and seasonal moods.
Do permanent Christmas lights replace traditional Christmas lights?+
For most of the home, yes. The roofline, soffits, and primary trim runs are all handled by the permanent system. Many clients still pair permanent roofline lighting with traditional installed tree wraps, wreaths, garland, and ground stake displays from our seasonal holiday lighting division for a complete look.
Can permanent lights be used for security lighting?+
Yes. The app supports scheduled bright-white modes that work as motion-independent dusk-to-dawn security lighting, and the system can also be programmed to flash red and blue on demand — a recommended response to suspicious activity.
Will the system work in Chicago winters?+
Yes. JellyFish fixtures are rated for extreme cold and heat, sealed against moisture, and routinely installed throughout Chicago, Minnesota, and Canada. The aluminum channel sheds ice and snow, and the system continues operating in subzero temperatures.
